Chair Kiley Announces Key Subcommittee Priority
“As Chair of the Workforce Protections Subcommittee, I will fight for workers and economic freedom, work in every way possible to defeat the PRO-Act, and shine a light on the unparalleled damage wrought by AB-5. President Biden’s PRO-Act, and a proposed Department of Labor rule, effectively implement AB-5 nationwide. As a California Legislator, I saw thousands of workers – from videographers and interpreters, to musicians and nurses – lose their livelihoods due to AB-5.” – Congressman Kevin Kiley
“During his time in the California legislature, Kevin Kiley was our strongest advocate in the fight for worker freedom. He knows firsthand the absolute devastation AB-5 has wrought on countless hardworking Californians. It’s reassuring to know he’s continuing the fight against these destructive policies on behalf of all Americans now that he’s in Congress.” – Karen Anderson, founder of Freelancers Against AB-5. Freelancers Against AB-5 represents over 18,000 California freelancers who were harmed by AB-5.
Background: Following the passage of AB-5, thousands of freelancers lost their livelihoods and were legally barred from performing the flexible work they loved in California. One of Rep. Kiley’s constituents, Ildikó Santana of Loomis, worked for over 20 years to build her clientele as a translator and lost every single one of the 50+ agencies she contracted with after AB-5 became law. An estimated 350,000 jobs will be destroyed if the PRO-Act becomes law. The Subcommittee on Workforce Protections will be the center of these policy battles, and as Chair, Rep. Kiley will not waiver in fighting for workers and preventing California’s disastrous policies from becoming law nationwide.
