Representatives Kiley and Other West Coast Members File Amicus Brief with Supreme Court
WASHINGTON – Representative Kevin Kiley (R-CA), joined by five other Members of the House from western states, has filed an Amicus Brief in a landmark homelessness case to be heard by the Supreme Court. In City of Grants Pass, Oregon v. Gloria Johnson, the Court can overturn a line of 9th Circuit decisions that prevent state and local governments from regulating or banning camping on public lands. Representative Cliff Bentz, who represents Grants Pass, Oregon, joined the brief along with Representatives Doug LaMalfa, Tom, McClintock, Jay Obernolte, and Darrell Issa.
“Our communities have seen a dramatic increase in homelessness, crime, and drug use on account of the 9th Circuit’s misguided decisions. We are urging the Supreme Court to enable local jurisdictions to adopt common sense policies to limit encampments in public spaces. Cities need to be able to act to protect public health and safety, while at the same time connecting those in need with services,” said Rep. Kiley.
