WASHINGTON – Today Representative Kevin Kiley (R-CA) recognized Marine Sergeant Nicole Gee after she was posthumously awarded the Congressional Gold Medal. The thirteen Servicemembers who died on August 26, 2021, while stationed at Hamid Karzai International Airport in Kabul, Afghanistan, were awarded the Gold Medal during a ceremony today.

“It has been over three years since we lost 23-year-old Marine Sergeant Nicole Gee of Roseville in Afghanistan. Sergeant Gee’s story has inspired millions across the country. Her heroism is cause for such pride in our community. Her loss remains so difficult to fathom,” said Rep. Kiley. “We must continue to support her family and honor her sacrifice in the years ahead. We must faithfully abide the solemn responsibility America owes to a fallen soldier: to honor, to memorialize, to never forget, so that Sergeant Gee’s legacy is forever woven into the fabric of our community.”

Seargent Gee was a graduate of Oakmont High School and had volunteered to go to the Hamid Karzai International Airport to help with the evacuation. Her fellow Marines would report, “She worked tirelessly, forgoing sleep and rest to help as many Afghan women and children escape as she could.” In the years since, we have continued to honor the legacy of Sergeant Gee. For example, her former high school, Oakmont High School, created the Sgt. Nicole Gee Memorial Scholarship. West Roseville is now home to Nicole Gee Road. The Women’s Veterans Alliance now annually awards the Beyond the Call of Duty award in Nicole’s honor.
