On August 5, I joined the AARP for a tele-town hall on recognizing and preventing potential fraud or scams. Unfortunately, there have been multiple examples of constituents losing money or access to their benefits. We did a survey during the call which asked, “Has someone ever tried to defraud or scam you or someone you know?” An alarming 68% of callers said yes. Fraudsters are known to target seniors because they typically have larger savings.
Here are some of the resources we discussed during the town hall that will help you recognize fraud:
- Federal Trade Commission
- AARP Fraud Watch Network and AARP Fraud Helpline: 1-877-908-3360
- DOJ Elder Justice Initiative
- Federal Trade Commission (FTC)
